[ "Chipmunk technique" on Baroque coloratura runs?] In this YouTube video,
Vivica Genaux, a mezzo soprano, sings Vivaldi's killer aria "Agitata da due
venti". I love her voice and she is amazing - but the way she sings
repeated notes like a squirrel.... not so pretty to look at (starts around
1:10). We've been trying to find out the best way to do it but this is
certainly not one of them!

Singers like Cecelia Bartoli or my favorite Julia Lezhaneva manage it
effortlessly but without using lips & jaws like Vivica Genaux does. In
fact, I don't know anyone else who can chipmunk her way through it.

You need to have a perfect control of your glottis, breathing and support.
I've been doing a vocal exercise to sing 5 consecutive notes with 'ha'
going up and down the scale. At the beginning, I could not do it - but now
I feel quite comfortable doing it.

Does anyone else know any other useful exercises to prepare yourself in
order to sing these kinds of Baroque runs? I would be very interested in
hearing them!

Sounds great, looks absurd.

No me gusto, puede que no se le viera muy bonito las articulaciones y
gestos que hacía, pero no me gusto que ella le estuviese dando su propio
toque, llego un momento en el que llevaba otro tiempo que no era el
indicado.

Vibrato from the jaw and lips. First time I see that trick...

Y así se demuestra como se pueden dar un millón de semifusas en un minuto y
no morir asfixiado.

Viveca Genaux is an artist of the highest order. I've seen her several
times recently in concert in San Francisco and Berkeley, and her voice is
even more spectacular in person. Contrary to many comments below, her
voice is improving with age. It has an amazing range and literally sparks
with a thousand colors! She is just entering her prime. Brava!

veo en los comentarios gente poco receptiva del arte. como cante no es un
problema sino lo que se escucha. su versión es una de las mejores. una gran
soprano sin duda.

I've always loved Vivica's peculiar performances. Looks like she's always
freezing cold haha. Her technique is interesting, even though I don't think
it's healthy for the voice. Here she seems to miss a note at 2'20", if I
listened right. And the tension, oh my, so much! That is totally
distracting, besides the faces..Bartoli's rendition is way better. Anyway,
Vivica's a fine actress and has a very good voice, I liker her :)
